OVERVIEW OF THREE CARD RUMMY

The game is played by forming a card hand that trumps that of the dealer’s, in value. There are several variations of rummy, and this is one of them. In this version, players are dealt 3 cards each. If their hand is valued less than the dealer, they win.

SETUP

Each player is dealt a total of 3 cards at the table. Bets are made with chips or cash. The card values are calculated, including any hands that form, and compared to that of the dealer. The winning hands are paid out.

GAMEPLAY

The dealer collects the Ante bets from all players. A maximum of 7 players can play in each round. Once all bets have been collected, each player will be dealt a total of 3 cards. Player’s cards are dealt face up while that of the dealers remain face down. The players then count their cards and take into consideration any hands that may have formed.

Points are calculated based on the face value of the cards. Numbered cards are accepted as is, court cards are assigned as 10, and Aces are valued at 1. Any hands that are formed are valued at 0.

Based on their active hand, players will decide to Fold or Play. If they fold, the Ante bet is forfeited and the round ends. Any player who chooses to play will make a further Play bet. The dealer opens his cards and the winning bet for Play is paid out.

There is also an optional Bonus bet. This bet pays out whenever a player’s active hand is scored at 12 and below. However, this bet has a high house edge, at 3.46%. This is nearly double that of the game itself.

RULES

  • Ante bets pay out when the player’s hand is lower than the dealer, in any situation.
  • Bonus bets pay out whenever the player’s hand is valued at 12 and below, in any situation.
  • To play, the dealer’s cards must qualify.
  • Dealers cards cannot exceed 0 – 20 to qualify for the Play round.
  • Players who want to play must make the Play bet.
  • The rule of thumb is that the lowest value card hand will win.

Start your turn by drawing a card from the top of the stock pile or the discard pile.

You dispose of cards by building melds which are made up of sets, three or four of a kind and the same rank; or runs, three or more cards in sequence and same suit.

An example set is the 7 of diamonds, 7 of hearts and 7 of spades.

An example run is the 4 of clubs, 5 of clubs and 6 of clubs.

When you have built a set or run it will automatically be taken from your hand and placed on the table.

Cards can also be added to the sets and runs which have already been laid down, this is called laying off.
